Though the backlog of processing new passport requests has subsided in the State Department over the
initial surge of requests, there may be another delay on the horizon. A new law that took effect in
January 2007 required travelers visiting Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean must have a passport -
locations that previously did not require this.
As the influx for new passports came in, so did the delays in processing them. In response, the State
Department issued an exception in June to allow travelers to present a government-issued photo ID and
proof of their pending application for a passport to suffice for the full-fledged passport itself.
However, this exception expired on September 30, 2007. This has industry experts and State Department
employees concerned over a new surge in requests and more possible delays.
So, if for instance, you are flying into Orlando International Airport to visit the great attractions in Orlando, FL
by renting a car
and then taking a cruise out of Port
Canaveral, you will want to make sure to apply for your passport as soon as possible.
E-Z Rent-A-Car offers car rentals at many cities that offer cruise port terminals, such as Tampa, FL,
Orlando, FL (through Port Canaveral) and Miami, FL.
