When at home do you support the local community by visiting the farmers market? This is a great way to support the community at home, but what about when you travel? Made up of local vendors and growers, some cities have expanded these markets to 7 day a week operations and enjoy out of town visitors.

Now traveling with fresh produce may not be the easiest thing to do, however you may be surprised by the many local goods available. Honey, fruit jams, and crafts make great gifts for family and friends back home. Here are a few cities that have markets that should be added to your itinerary.

Los Angeles. The Original Farmers Market was started in 1934 by Arthur Gilmore with 18 farmers. Paying rent of 50 cents a day, farmers parked their trucks on vacant land owned by Gilmore. Because of the success, additional stalls and shops were added. They created a fall festival in October 1934 and it is an annual event that continues every year. Today it is still located near Downtown Los Angeles, the market is a historical landmark with over 120 vendors is open 7 days a week featuring many local foods and crafts.

Dallas. In 1939 the demand for farm fresh meat and produce was on the rise. The first shed was established by the city and the market was born. Visiting today your will find four sheds featuring handmade crafts, locally grown produce, restaurants featuring local resources, and a floral market. So take the rental car and head on over to the market.

Seattle. Historically the oldest and still operating farmers market in the country started with eight farmers. Today the Pike Place Market is home to over 200 vendors including the home of flying salmon at the fish market. Check out the crafts market and specialty foods along with the many restaurants. Don’t miss the many farm fresh goods like apples that are being harvested right now.

So next time you take a trip to these or any city, consider supporting these markets and the local economy.
