Americans will dine at a restaurant for the holiday. If you're on vacation in Los Angeles over the holiday, you may have no other choice. Los Angeles does not have a reputation as a culinary hot spot when compared with other major cities, but that’s not to say that you can’t enjoy good value food. Any city this size is bound to offer plenty of great eating options and LA has its far share of iconic eateries; here are some great memorable places you can eat in Los Angeles.
Spago Beverly Hills
One of many swanky Beverly Hills restaurants that draw more than its fair share of celebrities, Spago is perhaps Wolfgang Puck's most famous restaurant in the United States. Winner of the James Beard Foundation's Outstanding Service Award in 2005 and the Wine Spectator Grand Award in 2010, Spago turns out exactingly presented gourmet fare at prices to match.
Pink’s Hot Dogs
Another West Hollywood institution is Pink’s Hot Dogs (709 N La Brea Avenue, West Hollywood; bus 10, 48, 212, 312 (MTA; stop: La Brea/Melrose); open Mon-Thu 9.30am-2am, Fri-Sat 9.30am-3am, Sun 9.30am-2am). LA’s most famous hot dog stand is popular with film stars and unique in having its own car park attendant. It gets mixed reviews with some people finding it a bit overrated, but it is still a must if you’re staying in West Hollywood.
Yamashiro Restaurant
Looking like an out-of-place pagoda and offering excellent views of the Los Angeles Basin from its perch in the Hollywood Hills, Yamashiro Restaurant has served LA's elite for about nine decades. This has been a favorite haunt for movie stars from the silent film era to the present. Originally specializing in authentic Japanese food, Yamashiro now serves Cal-Asian fusion dishes, blending the culinary best of California and Japan.
Lawry's
Located in the heart of La Cienega Boulevard's Restaurant Row, Lawry's is perhaps most famous for the annual Beef Bowl, where the competitors for the Rose Bowl game square off to see who can eat the most beef. However, this is where many Angelenos go when they want prime rib, carved right from the roast at their own tables and served with traditional Yorkshire pudding and creamed corn. Everyday folk have been rubbing elbows with celebrities at Lawry's since the 1920s.
