Tips on Preparing for Cold Weather Travel to Denver, CO

Heading out to Denver, CO this winter and don’t know what or how to pack? If you take too much, you’re spending an arm and a leg in luggage fees and leaving Denver International Airport with a rental car full of luggage. Here are some helpful tips on how to prepare yourself for the chilly weather and suggested items to keep your luggage and stress at a minimum.

  1. Know your agenda. Will your time in Denver include shopping, visiting museums, and enjoying some of Denver’s fantastic cuisine? Or do you plan to hop in the car rental and take a side trip to hit the slopes? Indoor vs. outdoor activities will largely determine what items you need to pack.
  1. Layer, Layer, Layer. Rather than packing those heavy knit sweaters that take up valuable luggage space, load up on thin, long and short sleeve shirts, and lightweight sweaters. Again, keep in mind whether you will be inside or outside so you know what layering items are most necessary.
  1. Carry your coat. A great space saver and way to avoid those annoying luggage fees is to carry your coat on the plane. Take this idea to another level and cram your mittens, scarves, socks, or whatever can fit into the pockets and arms of your coat. Wear your boots on the plane as well, as those also take up valuable suitcase space.
  1. Don’t Stress, Compress. If you can, compress as many of your heavy sweaters and other bulky items that take up suitcase space. The best way to do this is with space saver bags or large Ziploc bags.
  1. Don’t forget your socks. The real secret to keeping yourself warm and comfortable in frigid temps…socks. Keep them thick and keep your feet warm. Bring extra and also pack your comfortable, flat boots. If snow is on the forecast, do not and I repeat do not, plan to wear stiletto boots.
  1. Wind-Blowing Fleeces. These miracle garments are a cold weather traveler’s dream. They are thin, lightweight, pack easily, and most importantly provide a barrier against icy breezes. This is a cold weather staple and perfect for layering.
  1. Remember Cozy Clothes. As suggested in Tip #1, make sure you know your agenda for activities. However, don’t forget the moments where you may be doing nothing but cozying up to a fire sipping hot toddies and roasting marsh mellows. Leggings or a nice sweat suit are perfect options for those lazy moments.

As you set out for your cold weather excursion to Denver, CO, grab your airline ticket, confirm your Denver car rental and hotel, and again, don’t forget your socks! Happy and safe travels!
