Father’s day is approaching and no other locale offers so many fun ways to spend time with Dad than metro Atlanta. That’s right, if you and your Dad (or husband, brother, son, or friend!) travel to A-town the third Sunday in June, you’ll have no shortage of exciting opportunities around which to plan your day. Whether you’re on a fixed budget or have more money than Ted Turner, you can show the Dad in your life how much you care while having the time of your life!
Stone Mountain Park
Of course, one of the area’s biggest travel destinations is Stone Mountain Park. There’s always something new to do at Atlanta’s Big Rock. Hike to the top and gain a whole new perspective of this fair city. Golf, fish, or take in the history of the Confederacy, dine in one of the Park’s award-winning restaurants, and end your day with the finest laser show in the Southeast as you watch the Confederate memorial come alive. Stone Mountain Park is just a few miles northeast of the city.
The Georgia Aquarium
The Georgia Aquarium is ideal for the dad who would rather observe fish than catch them. Located in the heart of downtown, Georgia's aquarium is one of the largest exhibits of its kind. In addition to being a popular attraction, The Georgia Aquarium maintains aquatic conservation and environmentalism as its mission. Younger members of your party can experience the interactive exhibits at the aquarium.
See the Atlanta Braves
After your tour, enjoy a bite at the Café Aquaria, or continue celebrating dad in style at one of the fine Atlanta restaurants, then treat dad to an evening baseball game at “the Ted”, Turner Field. Your Atlanta Braves host the Los Angeles Angels on Father’s Day night. First pitch is at 8:00 pm. Tickets sell out pretty quickly, so go to the Atlanta Braves website to get yours today. Even the “cheap seats” promise a great game.
Sweetwater Brewing Company
Sweetwater Brewing Company, Atlanta’s own hometown craft brewery, offers tours on Father’s Day from 2:30 to 4:30. You’ll receive a complimentary tasting cup, with 6 tasting tickets, or treat dad to a commemorative pint glass and 6 additional tickets for just $10.00. If a unique craft beer is something your dad might enjoy, a trip to Sweetwater guarantees he’ll have a “Hoppy” Father’s Day.
Azalea Park
For the more adventurous, consider spending Father’s Day “shooting the ‘Hooch.” From Roswell’s Azalea Park, just north of Atlanta, you and dad can kayak, canoe, raft, tube, or stand-up and paddle board your way along one of the South’s loveliest rivers. Choose either a leisurely 1.5 or 3-mile trip, or embark on an all-day 8-mile trek, which winds through the city, past greenspace, established neighborhoods, and some of the area’s most prestigious homes. Be sure to visit the website to reserve your ride down the Chattahoochee River.
Grant Park
If you and your dad prefer a simple and inexpensive way to celebrate Father’s Day in Atlanta, consider spending a glorious Georgia afternoon in one of the city’s oldest parks. Grant Park is located next to Zoo Atlanta and provides a beautiful setting for a picnic and impromptu game of Frisbee. Wander over to Oakland Cemetery to see the historic resting place of many prominent Atlantans, dating back to the Civil War.
Finding a way to treat your dad to a special Father’s Day in Atlanta is pretty easy. Stroll the streets of Little Five Points, or Decatur, and enjoy an al fresco lunch at a sidewalk cafe, or check out Centennial Olympic Park to ride the Ferris Wheel and splash in the famous fountain. Whatever you choose, be certain that spending this special day with your dad is a treat in itself.
