There is something about camping that erases all stress and worries. With a few guidelines you can have a wonderful camping trip that is full of fun, entertainment and memories. A well-planned camping trip will have you planning the next trip before this one is even finished!
Pick The Right Location
The right campground and spot is very important. Visit the National Parks Service page to find a campground that suits you. Once you find the campground, look closely at the map of spots available. Determine where the water stations, trash, and bathrooms are located (if the camp ground offers these perks). You don't want to be too close to the water or bathroom for noise and traffic purposes. Hearing a bathroom door slam shut multiple times per night is not very relaxing yet walking forever in the dark is also not recommended. Find the middle ground.
When selecting the campground make sure it fits your goals for the weekend. Think about whether you are planning on staying at your campsite or enjoying the nearby activities and entertainment. If staying near the campsite, a campground with great views might be more important than a campsite that offers nearby hiking.
Pack The Right Items
- Sleeping bags and blankets are obviously essential. You can take two sleeping bags and zip them together to make a nice, big space for both of you to sleep together. If sleeping in a camper, make sure you bring clean sheets and warm blankets. Don't forget a pillow, especially if tent camping!
- Bring the right clothing. Look to see what the night time temperatures are. Oftentimes, you may wear shorts during the day but once the sun sets, you need to wear much warmer clothing. A rain jacket or umbrella can be very important depending on the area. Getting wet while camping really puts a damper on the fun.
- Bug spray, sun screen, a first aid kit and disinfectant wipes are essentials when camping. Bug bites, sunburn and filthy hands can quickly ruin a good time.
- Make a list of the utensils you will need. Commonly forgotten items include a lighter, can opener, tin foil to cover any existing grill, pan and other items needed depending on the meals you intend to cook. Sticks for marshmallows or hotdogs? Flat pan for scrambled eggs? Plan your meals and make sure you bring the required items.
- Don't forget camping chairs and bring a blanket that you can use to cover up with on cool mornings and evenings.
Plan The Right Activities
- A tablecloth, candles, matches and wine can add a very nice touch to your camping trip. Consider bringing a cooler and a nice meal to prepare. Steak and lobster are great to cook on the grill.
- Snuggle up in front of the fire, talk and watch an amazing sunset with your significant other.
- Bring your favorite games you never have time for. Board and card games can provide hours of entertainment and are a great option if weather forces you to stay in your tent or camper.
Planning a memorable and special camping trip requires a bit of forethought but can easily be accomplished. With a great campground and site picked, you have set the stage for a wonderful camping trip. Take the time to enjoy each other, regroup and refresh. Leave your work behind if at all possible. Put the cell phones up. Focus on yourself and your partner and truly connecting. Talk to each other, play games with each other and create memories. A great camping trip will leave you craving another one!
