The 4th of July is upon us! Time to get ready for a fun filled day of barbecuing, games, family, and friends. If you are hosting a party at home or traveling to host a party with family or friends, there are quite a few things you can do to make it a fun and memorable day. Before the fireworks begin, get the party started the right way with a few fun tips.

Activities

No party, especially the 4th of July, is complete without some entertainment. Of course one of the most popular activities in the hot summer is swimming. If you have a pool then you are golden! But for those that don't, there are other water activities you can set up. Also, you can plan some other fun for everyone.

  • Slip and slide races are always fun for the kids. Or set up a water balloon fight, get creative and make teams, last one dry wins for the team. Make up a relay race with water balloons and end it with the slip and slide to win.
  • Other outdoor activities for all ages could be horseshoes, ring toss, or just kick back and relax with good food and refreshments.
  • When it gets close to the end of the evening set the mood for fireworks with patriotic music.
  • Classic party games could be fun too! Dominoes, yahtzee, trivial games, and other classics are a great idea, especially if your party will be indoors.

Food

Up the BBQ ante with a few creative ideas for food and serving it in an exciting way. BBQ is always a great idea, especially for July 4th. There are several fun tips for preparing and serving your food that will please all your guests.

  • Barbecuing hot dogs? Serve up the dogs in a "Hot Dog Bar." Look up and print out some combination ideas for guest such as "Chicago Dog" or "The Tex-Mex Dog." Set out all the fixings and let them "have-at-it." Good sides include baked beans, potato salad, chips, and mac and cheese.
  • Is carne asada more your style? Make it a "Taco Bar!" Get some chicken, pork, and hamburger meat to complete it.
  • Make some fun patriotic treats; Oreos dipped in white chocolate and sprinkled with blue and red sprinkles will do the trick.
  • Fruits are perfect and refreshing. Make kabobs with blueberries, strawberries, and marshmallows. Line fruit in a tray to resemble the flag. Don't forget the ice cream! Get vanilla and add red and blue sprinkles or candies.

The Fireworks

The number one, most enjoyed part of July 4th would have to be the fireworks. There is always a spot around town to sit and watch a fireworks show. However, some locations allow certain fireworks to be used at home. Always use caution, have a bucket of water close at hand, and follow safety guidelines.

Visiting Family

If you plan to travel for the 4th of July celebration, make sure you cover these points before you set out on the road:

  • Check the tires, oil, and other components before you travel
  • Drive safely and be aware of other vehicles
  • Never drink and drive!

Bring entertainment for the kids if you are traveling far. A good rule for packing kids up in the car is to include an activity bag. Include a book, coloring book and crayons, a favorite toy, movies, and an electronic game.
