Starting at an early age, your parents may have pulled a classic trick on you like replacing the Oreo frosting with tooth paste or short sheeting your bed. These little pranks usually were followed by someone yelling “April Fools”.
This day of jokes and pranks were not just made up by your parents. All Fools’ Day or April Fools’ Day has an uncertain origin. Two of the most popular are a celebration of the change of the seasons or the adoption of a new calendar.
Ancient cultures used to celebrate New Year’s Day on April 1, this was just after the vernal equinox of spring. However the change from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian that was ordered in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII is the most popular. The change of the calendar called for New Year’s Day to be moved to January 1st. When people in Europe refused to accept the new date, the traditionalist were sent on fool’s errands or tricking them into untruths.
Neither of these have any direct historical evidence for the explanation of April Fools’ Day. The day is now celebrated worldwide by playing pranks and getting people to believe ridiculous things. Thanks to the internet today, these pranks have taken these pranks to a new level. Some pranks going viral thanks to video from mobile devices.
