6 Ideas for a Fun Family Staycation

In this world of deadlines and overwork, few things are as valued as a vacation. But if you are a parent, you know that no matter how much you deserve a vacation, taking off to an exotic locale simply may not be in the budget. And if your children are very young, traveling long distances may be more stressful than a job. To that end, when reviewing your options for a little rest and relaxation, why not consider a staycation?

The idea of staying home rather than going away for vacation may seem to defeat the purpose, but there are probably plenty of fun and interesting things to do right where you are that you keep putting off because of time constraints. A little vacation time is the perfect opportunity to explore local attractions.

Amusements

It is likely there are attractions near enough to your home that warrant a visit. Even small towns often have a zoo or amusement park within a couple of hours' drive. It is a great way to get away and see something different without the hassle and expense of packing up and booking a hotel.

Educational Activities

Your staycation entertainment can be educational, too. Most local libraries offer summer reading programs with activities for children and families. These activities may include storytellers, magicians or other local entertainers.

See a Show

If your children are old enough, you may also want to consider exposing them to live theater. Larger cities often have children’s theaters with shows specifically geared toward families and children. Entertainment can be inexpensive. Some larger cities even offer things like free concerts and plays in the park. Even smaller towns have community theaters. Make sure to check out the schedule, however, to see if the show is appropriate for all ages.

If you want to see a show, consider a family movie night. Local cinemas often have a lower price for matinee showings or films beginning before a certain time. Enjoy a new film on a big screen with surround sound and your family all around you. Or, you could rent a DVD and pop your own corn—in your own house, no one will mind if you chatter through the movie, throw popcorn at the screen or pause for a bathroom break.

Swimming

In most towns, there is usually a place to swim, whether it is a beach, a lake or a public pool. These are often a great place to cool off and have fun. Of course, if you have very small children and want to go super simple, swimming can be as easy as the wading pool in your own backyard.

Camping

Speaking of backyards, the backyard is a great place to pitch a tent. Children will enjoy the novelty of hanging out in a tent, and you will appreciate the proximity of clean restroom facilities. Depending on the local codes you may be able to build a fire for roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. If building a fire isn’t possible, roast your treats over a grill. Pull out the sleeping bags and you are all set for a night under the stars. But, if little ones are not up for a full night out, their bed is just a few feet away.

Date Night

Another benefit of a staycation is that when parents want to go out alone, trusted babysitters are just a phone call away.

A staycation can provide you with fun and entertainment without the hassle and expense of travel. With so many things to see and do right at home, a staycation is the way to go.
