Whether you spend a lot of time on the road or just take the occasional business trip, you know they can be tiring, boring and often very rushed. This is unfortunate, because a business trip is often an opportunity to be in a new place, away from home. It should be an adventure, not a chore. Not only that, but it can also be an opportunity to spend a bit of fun time with the family (or on your own) while getting some work done. Sound impossible? It's not! Here are some tips to inspire you to think of your next business trip less as a chore and more as a mini-vacation!
If You're Traveling Solo
If you have been busy, stressed and overwhelmed with work and life responsibilities, a business trip to another city, state or even country is your ticket to a little self-indulgence. Even if you have a busy schedule, you can still squeeze in some "me" time. Here are three simple ideas if you're traveling on your own:
- Pamper yourself with DIY spa treatments, right in your hotel room. You can also ask the hotel concierge if there is a local spa with massage service nearby. Pack scented candles, your favorite bubble bath and some soothing tunes.
- Never get a chance to watch your favorite chick flicks or action films? Now is your chance! Many rooms have DVD players, or you can bring your own. Pack all your favorite movies and spend an afternoon or evening binge-watching your favorites. Order room service, get your comfy clothes on and watch away with no one complaining about your choice in movies.
- Even a short trip to a new place is a chance to explore. Just because you are traveling solo and only in town for a day does not mean you can't be a tourist. Do your homework and choose an attraction or activity that you can do. Eat local food, take in a show or an art gallery. Go to a park or famous landmark. Take pictures, have fun!
If You're Traveling With Your Partner
If you have the chance to bring a loved one along on your business trip, think of it as a chance to rekindle the flame while also getting a little work done. Your partner will most likely be spending the majority of their time exploring the city on their own, but that doesn't mean you can't carve out a coupe of hours to catch some sights with them.
- A weekend away is a weekend away, even if you are working. If you have the opportunity to bring your significant other along on a business trip, make the most of it. Find out where the most romantic spot in town is, and make the time to go.
- If you won't have a lot of down time, make the most of what you have. Order room service. Take time to reconnect, learn new things about each other. Do silly romantic things. Watch your wedding video or talk about the first time you met.
- Laughter is good for the soul. Find out if there is a nearby comedy club, or bring a bunch of funny movies. After a long day of boring presentations, you probably need a good laugh.
If You're Traveling With Kids:
Traveling with your children? It might seem tough to keep them occupied and entertained when you're busy with meetings, presentations, and conferences all day long. The good news is, it's not impossible!
- Bring travel games and things to do to keep the kids busy during down time.
- Let the kids know where you will travel to ahead of time and research it together. Let them help to choose a place that sounds interesting to visit.
- Find out if any local sports teams will be playing, and catch a game.
- Kids often love staying in hotels. Have a pajama party, complete with games, fun snacks and stories.
Your Trip Doesn't Have to Be All Business
Business travel doesn't have to be boring. A little imagination and an open mind can make it a fun adventure no matter who is going. Change your mindset from "have to" to "get to" and enjoy your trip!
